I didn’t know what it was during the Paralympic ceremony, but later research has shown that this is a replica of a Marc Quinn statue of pregnant disabled artist Alison Lapper, and was originally displayed on the fourth plinth at Trafalgar Square.
The speed at which this statue appeared was astonishing – it’s an inflatable.
I have to admit it’s a bit of a shock but in the context of these games this statue had to be pretty moving. What was the crowd’s response?

What with the noise and general chaos it’s hard to tell what people thought – things moved so fast! From the distance and angle of my view I couldn’t tell if it was a man or woman. It’s only afterwards, having seen the image from my camera’s zoom, and having seen other views from the side, that you understand better.
